As one of the largest best preserved and most diverse forests in Africa, Nyungwe is a tourist favourite for those on safari in Rwanda. Tucked away amid the mountains and tea plantations, it can be a bit deceptive in its vastness if you simply catch a glimpse of it from afar. Extending into Burundi in the guise of Kibira National Park, the animals are encouraged to migrate through the open borders in order to promote natural movement without man-made restrictions.
A highlight of the Forest is the canopy walk, the only one in East Africa, which allows visitors to see the environment from a different perspective. But if you do not have a head for heights there are so many opportunities at ground level to track 13 different primate species and view other mammals close up. There are over 130km of hiking trails, exploring through the ancient rainforest and making the most of the opportunities to connect with nature.
